I’m always on the look out for Asian restaurants near me so I went to try Kang-In in Dubendorf.
Very hard to find: they don’t have a big sign post at the top of the building. I drive by almost everyday and never noticed it. When I asked the waiter he said he’d need to ask permission but he’s been there forever, 13 years to be precise, so I guess people just know where to find it.
We went for a cheap and cheerful lunch. It tasted like Thai. We went for the lunch buffet:
- Entree: deep fried spring rolls and money bags
- Main:
- Prawn in a Red Curry: coconut milk, eggplant, bamboo shots, onions, basil
- Chicken in a Panang white curry: coconut milk, eggplant, lemon leaves
- Beef Massaman Curry: Peanut Curry in coconut milk with potatoes and cashew nuts
- Vegetable curry – not too sure which curry they used there
- Dessert: fruit plate including canned lychees and longan, rockmelon, orange, pineapple, kiwis
- Drink: pot of green tea
What we liked:
- service: nice straight forward Asian dude
- tasteful decoration: they don’t try to mix and match decoration from various south east asian countries. One picture of Angkor, dark walls, wooden table, soft lighting, that did the job for me. I felt it wasn’t too much of a fast food.
- the buffet lunch: simple but tasty, quick and relatively good value. All you can eat from the entree, main and dessert buffet above + one drink for approx 27 CHF (from memory as my husband took care of the bill)
- Some reviews mention the amazing Tom Ka Gai, I should go back and try that
- tea came nicely presented with candy sugar (but who uses sugar with green tea though?)
What we didn’t like
- no sign post obviously visible from the street
- one dish was sold out and never refilled – I’m guessing it was the veggie curry
